Dennis Goris broke my heart, Pat Bagley made me furious, Rick McKee had me laughing out loud, but I'm in awe of and grateful for all the artists and the commentary in this collection.

Dennis Goris wins today's Lincoln "I must laugh lest I weep" award. ROFL to Ramirez.

Pat Bagley and Dennis Goris are the first ones today, nose to nose, poignant, saddening, infuriating. Nick Anderson is close second. The others are a rum scrum for third place.

His name is Smokey Bear. No article. He weeps. So, too, do I. Closing research stations whose mission is to protect a resource with a longer view than an electoral cycle, from an agency with a mandate that is apparently being ignored or misunderstood by a billionaire former Governor from N. Dakota is among the most short-sighted in a series of poor administrative decisions that will not be reversible. Much of the Forest Services research studies long term effects of management practices. To evaluate these effects one necessarily performs long term experiments. There are ongoing experiments where the experimental units were established in the 1930s. Data are still being collected. This disruption will - BY DESIGN - destroy much of the institutional memory, because many Forest Service employees will choose not to accept re-assignment, all too many will choose to retire. By and large, these people are dedicated public servants; they are not political appointees. Moreover, they cherish the natural environment. The forests are more than unharvested lumber. Forests provide services more important than Trump or his lackeys are aware: watersheds management (the Adirondack State Forest in N.Y. was created specifically because the Hudson River turned red from clearcutting much of the area in the 1890s); wildlife habitat; genetic resources; soil stabilization and creation; recreational opportunities. Arbor Day is coming up. Stop this shit now.
