Congress returned to Washington this week, proving once again that America’s most exclusive retirement community still occasionally conducts legislative business.
Over 50 years ago, when I worked in the Viewpoints section of Newsday, I had the delightful chore of finding art for the op-ed page. I got to see the work of all all the cartoonists of the day, many of them quite wonderful, but none of them could touch Pat Oliphant. And I say that even though I got to work next to the late, great Tom Darcy.
I recognize this style from my early childhood- including the little birds with the punchlines! Now in my early 70’s, just beginning to be aware of the power of the cartoonist’s legacy.
Pat Oliphant always has been one of my heroes, and I mourn his passing. Fortunately, there are comparable talents and you showcase them, for which I'm grateful.
I first discovered Oliphant as a kid during the Nixon years, I learned to draw Nixon because of his cartoons ... he was definitely one of the greatest!!!
The number of papers is diminishing, therefore the venues for these necessary talents. The SF Chronicle had several terrific artists, and Jack Ohman just won the Herblock Prize ..
I was unfamiliar with Pat Oliphant's quote about the goal of a political cartoonist, “Make people write letters to the editor. Get mad.”
But I wholeheartedly agree. He will be missed.

This is genius! Is there any way to "pay as you go" or make a one-time gift? I can't keep track of subscriptions -- my head explodes!

Ann Telnaes had a nice little piece on Pat today. I do remember liking his work and seeing his signature.
