The government shutdown is about to serve America a big, cold helping of irony: millions of people—mostly in red states—are about to lose their food stamps thanks to the politicians they voted for.

On November 1, SNAP benefits are set to run out because Congress can’t agree on a budget, leaving 42 million low-income Americans wondering whether dinner will consist of actual food or just vacuous MAGA slogans. The Trump administration’s USDA website helpfully announced that ā€œthe well has run dry,ā€ while simultaneously blaming Democrats—in a clear violation of the Hatch Act—not that the rule of law has ever stopped this administration from doing anything.
