Darrin Bell's Best of 2020
I approached 2020 as if cartoonists and journalists were combatants in a war against the lies that always precede a dictatorship. Donald Trump was hollowing out our institutions, the Republican Senate had declared him to be above the law, he’d emboldened hateful, militant white supremacists, and perhaps for the first time since the Revolution, our democracy was in real danger of ending.
Meanwhile, Democrats were spineless. Even in the face of a pandemic, the corrupt, amoral old guard in charge of the party was sabotaging the effort to ensure healthcare for everyone. And the nation came closer than ever before to facing up to its calculated and horrific, centuries-long treatment of black Americans.
It felt like this moment was why journalism is enshrined in the Constitution itself. So this year, I had no interest in commenting on anything that wasn’t about life or death, about the depravities we choose to ignore depending on who commits them, or about the soul of our country.
