Chip Bok's Best of 2020
My mother was a talented portrait artist. She bought me a Jon Gnagy Learn to Draw Kit when I was 4 years old and taught me how to draw. There was a lot of talk about politics in our house. I remember my dad remarking that the Johnson / Goldwater campaign was a choice between a crook and a crank. Then there was Vietnam, Nixon and Mad Magazine. I was hooked, I would be a cartoonist. So I majored in English in college. Why not? I already knew how to draw.
Turned out Jon Gnagy wasn’t all he was cracked up to be. It took me six years to land my first job at the Clearwater Sun in Florida. And it took me six months to get fired.
I dusted myself off and moved on to Knight Ridder and the Miami Herald where I had my own panel cartoon about alligators, giant cockroaches and unusual tropical fruit. From there it was on to the Akron Beacon Journal and Creators Syndicate where I drew about even weirder stuff — politicians.
You may have read about newspapers on Twitter, but if you’re like most people you probably don’t read an actual newspaper. That’s why I’m glad editorial cartoons live on in places like Counterpoint.com. It’s a brilliant concept — deranged cartoonists going at each other from left and right. Except for one thing. It’s really hard to find cartoonists from any side who don’t hate Trump.
Well, that’s where I come in. It takes a Jon Gnagy-trained eye to see that only Donald Trump was insane enough to be a great president. But he blew it. Here’s your chance to get really pissed off by 20 of the cartoons I liked best from the past year. Enjoy.Chip Bok
